I’m not sure what was worse—having to tell him or seeing his muted reaction. He’s 14 now and I’ve had to explain this kind of bigotry to him many times before, so the revelation elicited little more than an eye roll. He has come to expect it now.

Dr. Singer is long dead now, gone to whatever religion’s Hell will deign to accept her. But she has her disciples who carry on her debunked work. One in particular is Stephen Kent, a sociologist who steadfastly clings to Singer’s universally rejected work like a flea to a hound. It is, after all, his livelihood.

I made it 31 minutes in, to the scene that managed to insult Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Rastafarianism, and yes, even managed to throw in multiple jabs at Scientology.

1964. For most Americans, vegetables at the dinner table were an afterthought. What vegetables there were, were certainly not fresh. They were frozen or canned. One of the biggest purveyors of such veggies was the Green Giant Company. The company’s symbol and “spokesman” was the Jolly Green Giant.

“This is classic,” I thought. This guy was the poster child for the usual type of person who rages against Scientology. You’ve met this type in your own life. Ignorant, smug, self-satisfied, self-aggrandizing, self-deluded, in a constant search for anything and anyone to hate and belittle, thinking it will somehow make them look good.

Left, Right, or Center, the editorial boards all have an agenda. They’re all preaching to their own choir, which also happens to be their financial base.

When a reporter takes on the subject of (someone else’s) religion, he or she does not usually understand what he or she is reporting on, or is relying on biased/slanted data and ignoring the sensibilities of their intended audience.

Why attack or defame that level of commitment? Why would the FFRF see this as a threat to their organization? To humanity? Are these badges saying “for God and country” actually a threat to anything at all?

The effort to make these religious groups seem dangerous, threatening or just plain weird was prodigious. And didn’t really work on me, to be honest—my husband’s family includes a large branch of Jehovah’s Witnesses and they all seem perfectly normal to me.

My sons were raised on Disney. We watched movies like Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Toy Story, over and over and over and over again.
