What the News Media Will Never Tell You About Scientology

I have been in Scientology since 1980. At the age of 24 my life had become consumed by alcohol and drug abuse. I was on the fast track to an early grave. I had managed to stop the cycle of drug use, but after suffering through severe withdrawal and DTs, was an emotional wreck and unable to face the routine tasks of daily living. I was off drugs but had no life left. Scientology gave me back my life and returned me to being a productive member of society. I have now been sober for 36 years, with no relapse into drug or alcohol abuse. I have been happily married for 31 years. I owe my success and very life to the help and teachings of Scientology.

I have raised two sons, both in Scientology since birth. My sons are now close to the age I was when drugs and alcohol had consumed my life. As the son of an alcoholic who was also the son of an alcoholic, I understand how oftentimes drug and alcohol abuse can spread from one generation to the next. Following the teachings of Scientology, I have never even been concerned for the safety of my children, and both are drug- and alcohol-free. Both are kind, intelligent, productive members of society. Scientology has provided my entire family with a solid moral foundation and the tools for successful living.

No doubt there are people who would make derogatory statements about Scientology; every great movement throughout history has had its opponents. There are always those who, due to motives of which no decent person can conceive, attempt to tear down and destroy anything good and moral.

Scientology is a movement for good in our society. Scientologists work every day to help people out of drug addiction and improve the lot of every one of us. Scientology stands in opposition to Big Pharma which destroys lives and makes billions of dollars annually by pushing destructive mind-altering drugs to the most defenseless in our society: children, the elderly, and the mentally impaired. Scientology fights for religious freedom and human rights for all people.

It’s time we strive to understand our neighbor and his religious views without prejudice and media sensationalism. It is up to each one of us to make the truth known, whatever that may be.

Our current news media seems more interested in sensationalism and scandal than facts. Very often I wonder who stands to benefit from the slant of a particular news story. What are the motivations of the people who publish such obviously biased, one-sided “news”? It is my sincere hope that we will one day live in a world where the media puts integrity and truthfulness as its highest priority. We rely on true journalism to help us know what is happening in the world and uncover real injustice and prejudice wherever it exists.

Meanwhile, I will continue to benefit from my religion. Scientology helps people every day, members and non-members alike. It’s time we strive to understand our neighbor and his religious views without prejudice and media sensationalism. It is up to each one of us to make the truth known, whatever that may be. I don’t think we can any longer rely on the “news” media to do so.
