David Miscavige Never Forgets Anyone

I am lucky that I was born into a family that had already found Scientology.

I grew up in Northern California, the oldest daughter to my young, just-into-Scientology-and-so-excited parents. They happened to discover Scientology in 1993—a pretty magical year: Scientology had just achieved sweeping recognition from the United States government after many years of fighting for this freedom, so I arrived in this world at quite the bright beautiful dawn for my religion.

David Miscavige

Only now, writing this, do I realize that David Miscavige has had an effect on my life since literally day one. From my first breaths, he ensured I had the freedom and safety to discover my own truths and happiness in Scientology—precisely what I have done for over 30 years now. And that’s not even considering all he has done for me and every member of my family, my friends and the world at large every day since. That would take too many more blogs to detail.

Today, I simply want to share with you the first time I met David Miscavige.

I looked up to see Mr. Miscavige smiling, waving and walking over to me. I couldn’t believe it.

It was at a bustling event, celebrating the grand opening of a new Church that many of us had worked hard to bring about in Los Angeles. The place was packed and buzzing, with everyone so excited to see this beautiful dream come to life.

Because David Miscavige somehow manages to join, celebrate and acknowledge virtually every new Church opening across the world—no matter the time zone, language or logistics—he was there with us, and I observed him speaking with a group, about to take a photo with them.

I happened to be in the right place at the right time and was, to my delight, invited to join.

Since it was such a busy day for the leader of our religion, I assumed we would pose quickly for the shot and he would move onto the next excitement.

But I was so very pleasantly surprised.

Before anything else, David Miscavige asked each of us our names and introduced himself. There were more than a dozen of us, but every time he came to a new one, he seemed to speak to them like they were the only person in the room. And then he came to me. I felt the whole busy background disappear and realized how genuinely and completely interested he was in me as an individual, and how appreciative that I had attended and was going to participate in this photo with everyone.

I had never had an exchange like that before or since—and I’ve worked in the entertainment industry for years!

We took the photo and said goodbye and returned to the rest of the event. It was a great moment and I thought: “I can’t wait to meet him again sometime.”

Years later, I was attending another Church event with my family, when suddenly I spotted David Miscavige walk into the room. I immediately assumed there was no way he would remember me—after all, it had been years. I also didn’t want to interrupt his evening, so I found myself a conversation to join.

A few moments later, I looked up to see Mr. Miscavige smiling, waving and walking over to me. I couldn’t believe it. It’s not uncommon to introduce yourself a few times before someone actually remembers you, but the leader of my religion appeared to remember exactly who I was—even half a decade later.

Mr. Miscavige thanked me for being there and asked how I had been since the last time we spoke and what I was up to now. It truly meant so much, and it inspired me. Since then, I’ve tried to go out of my way to make others feel the way David Miscavige made me feel at that moment and every other lucky moment like that since.

Now, whenever I see Mr. Miscavige, I make a point of giving him a big enthusiastic wave first. Because whether it’s on a global scale—ensuring everyone on Earth has the chance to create happiness for themselves and for those they love—or on a personal level, in a simple one-on-one chat, I know David Miscavige never forgets anyone.
