I write this on the eve of L. Ron Hubbard’s birthday. And though I’m not old enough to have celebrated a birthday in person with him, March 13 has been a day my family and friends have celebrated together for as long as I can remember.
It has always been a beautiful occasion, a very special day each year. Friends and family gather from near and far to hear and share the good news of the year—things I know he would have loved to hear.
Even though it is his birthday we are celebrating, I am the one yet again leaving with the best gift of all.
Thinking about it today, after 30 years of celebrating it, I find myself reflecting on what it all means and has meant over the course of my life.
The first thought that comes to mind is what L. Ron Hubbard said when he was asked what gift he wanted most for his birthday.
Because his answer was that he wanted more and more people to be helped and given the tools to create the happiness and lives of their choosing—that year, and every year after.
Even just writing it, that sentiment hits me straight in the heart.
I can’t help but reflect on how many ways that birthday wish has come true when it comes to me and my own life. The joy and beauty I’ve experienced thanks to L. Ron Hubbard’s research and findings and work comprising Dianetics and Scientology often feels intensely personal, yet its impact ripples far beyond my own life. It’s remarkable to realize that this same technology is helping someone else, thousands of miles away, at the same time.
Most of us feel lucky to leave a positive effect on a handful of people’s lives—perhaps those we know best or get to spend the most time with. But he has—and continues to—positively touch millions of lives simply by giving people the technology to realize their own potential.
In this day and age, sometimes things can feel a little scary—the news, technology, politics, clashing ideas and opinions, crime and so on—especially as a parent or anyone who cares about others they love. But L. Ron Hubbard has managed to do something I haven’t seen anyone else do: to fully understand exactly what it will take to make the world a safer and happier place, and provide the tools, groups, resources, empowerment, courage and love to make it so—from neighbors to nations, and everything in between.
Because of L. Ron Hubbard, I see that making this world a better place is a big job, yet one I can truly play a part in.
As a result, each year, and this one just the same, I find myself thinking about how, even though it is his birthday we are celebrating, I am the one yet again leaving with the best gift of all.
Then I think warmly of the many others—all over the world—who feel the same way, just as he wished.
So this year, I’m going to celebrate by playing my part in fulfilling that wish, and helping as many people as I can, even if in small ways, all in honor of him.
Happy birthday, Sir! Thank you for making your gift a gift for us all.
