COMBATING BIGOTRY & HATE
Don’t be an accomplice. At the very least, step away. Even better, write a letter. Tell the editor what the freedoms above mean to you.
COMBATING BIGOTRY & HATE
When I see a platform given to a person whose stock in trade has become slander and libel of religion, I get concerned. I’ll be so bold as to speak for freedom-loving Oregonians (which is most of them).
SCIENTOLOGY RELIGION
In just about every society on earth, we humans are handed nothing but limits from the time we are born. The limits of popular opinion, culture, and thought along with authorities to appeal to, permissions to ask, expectations to meet.
TOLERANCE
If you complain long and loud to a Scientologist about your spouse, your boss, your church or your kids, the Scientologist may ask you an interesting question: “Have you done something they almost found out about?”
SCIENTOLOGY RELIGION
Recently, I've found myself fielding numerous questions about what Scientologists “believe,” so I'm going to address the subject of belief in Scientology in a way you're probably not expecting. Bear with me. First of all, no one is expected to “believe” anything in Scientology.
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
Some smells made customers stay longer. Others had them fleeing the premises. The research also found odors needed to be appropriate—the smell of fish in a leather store, for example, probably wasn’t going to lead to higher pocketbook sales.
TOLERANCE
“Buy me a drink?” That is what the policeman said to my relative after stopping him for speeding on a highway in a Caribbean country. My relative had the tact to be polite, to admit to speeding and to treat the officer with respect.
TOLERANCE
Hysterical cheers swept through the flock like gusts of wind across a wheat field. Krak stood silent, smiling, soaking in the sounds as if each was a cry of adoration for him personally. In the frenzy, three innocent gulls were pecked to death.
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
The origins of Islam in the U.S. today trace back to one simple concept, one word, three syllables: sla-ve-ry. When Ilhan Omar joined Rashida Tlaib in the House of Representatives at the beginning of January, 2019, wielding a huge copy of the Quran, she became the first Somali-American in Congress. A person of color and a Muslim, Omar fled Somalia as a child and emigrated to America at the age of 13.
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
Some people see freedom as dangerous. They see people who cannot be enslaved as dangerous. They are the type who think that if people were free, those people would be as mean and cruel as they themselves are.
