Slashfilm.com—“The Only Downside” Is Your Intolerance

Shame on you for allowing your shallow understanding of another’s religious faith to color your reportage of what is truly an exceptionally brave contribution to society.

Dear Ms. Bui,

Nice of you to note the heroic work of Riverdale actress Marisol Nichols, who is actually doing something about sex trafficking. Pity you felt you had to resort to trying to shame her for her religious beliefs in the process.

I can’t imagine a less appropriate moment or a more repulsive way to say—as you did in your recent article about the accomplishments of Nichols, a righteous, courageous individual who has herself endured abuse—that “the only downside” is that she is a member of a faith you apparently personally disdain.

Would you insult a medical researcher who, after surviving a dread disease, engaged themselves in a search for a cure, by commenting that “the only downside” was that they were Jewish?

All the more repulsive is the fact that if you had done a less flippant and perfunctory job of investigation, you would have easily discovered that the religion you impugn so casually, Scientology, is one of the most charitable and ethical in the world today, and its members among the most productive, self-sacrificing, law-abiding and generous.

Shame on you for allowing your shallow understanding of another’s religious faith to color your reportage of what is truly an exceptionally brave contribution to society.

Sincerely,

Jim Meskimen
