A Prayer for Tabloid Hatemonger Emma Parry
After viewing published hate by The Sun’s Emma Parry against my religion—content which reflects more on her lack of work, commitment and integrity as a journalist than it does on my faith—rather than feeling anger at her attempt to harm good people, I feel pity for her and offer her this prayer:
May you come to see the people you write about as actual flesh-and-blood beings, with goals, feelings, failings, and emotions, rather than as convenient ciphers to scorn.
May your empathy rise as your hatred lessens.
May your vision improve so as to see beyond differences of color, belief and practice.
May your sources no longer reflect your own bitter view of the world, but be themselves trustworthy with no axes to grind.
May your writing skills grow as your respect for your profession grows.
May your integrity increase as your choice of meaningful subject matter rises.
May your responsibility to your craft be reflected in honest admiration by men and women of substance and integrity.
May your own self-respect be reflected by your commitment to truth over lies, and accuracy over clickbait.
And may a miracle happen in your heart and cause you to feel remorse for the damage you’ve done, regret for what you cannot undo, and a resolve to become what you can be: a truthful and eloquent messenger.
