The Secretary-General of the United Nations joined with the U.S. State Department and India’s External Affairs Ministry in denouncing the incident in which dozens of civilians were killed and injured.

“We stand with the Muslim community, Christchurch, New Zealand, and all those affected by this insane act of bigotry and destruction,” said International STAND Director Edward Parkin. “There are no words that can undo it—no band-aids for the hurt, horror and sadness the victims, their families, New Zealand and the international Muslim community are suffering right now. But what we can and must do is ensure this event brings us closer together, rather than what the perpetrators most want: to drive us apart.”

Seventy-four years ago today, more than 7,000 prisoners were liberated from Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. As these once-again free people poured through the gates and returned to the world, they could not forget the 1.1 million who had already lost their lives within. Or the more than six million others killed elsewhere.
