In a September 10 posting on a tabloid website, anti-Scientology hate blogger Tony Ortega exploits the anniversary of 9/11 to forward his campaign of denigration and bigotry against Scientologists—in this case, the 800 Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VM) who worked at Ground Zero.

People are catching on to the fact that the real publicity stuntperson is that individual on the sidelines, complaining shrilly, discriminating abundantly, broadcasting her own intolerance, leveling her own bigotry and grinding her own axe while the hard work of helping others and keeping hope alive is being done by dedicated parishioners of the Church of Scientology.

Last October, eleven worshippers at the at Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania were murdered during Shabbat morning services by a man whose only knowledge of his victims was that they were Jewish. And he hated Jews. [i] It was the worst anti-Semitic attack in American history.

He started bringing new people by and introducing them. I joked with him that he was training new people and I must be an easy touch. He said I was the only person on my street that would open the door for him.

A few months ago I reconnected with an old, incredibly close friend of mine from my long-gone youth, a friend who had a major impact on my teenage life. Our reconnection conversation was a satisfying look back that gave me a renewed appreciation of my life looking forward.

I’ve been in Scientology since 1975. For 32 of those years I worked in a Church of Scientology as a staff member. For 19 of those 32 years, I was the Executive Director of the Church of Scientology in Denver. So, I pretty much have seen whatever there is to see in a Church of Scientology.
TOLERANCE
As I continued on the last leg of my trip, I mulled over my encounters with these two men from very different demographics—two separate age groups, two different nationalities, two distinct social statuses.

Understand, that if one innocent person or group is not safe among us—if one person or group is denied the freedoms that are our basic human rights—none are safe.

We as Scientologists have worked hard to demonstrate our values to the world. We help. We are first responders to world disasters. We are mothers and fathers, neighbors and tutors. Nice people, moral people. We have faces and names. We have rights. And one of them is the right to practice our religion.
