Thecountyline.com Pushing Religious Bigotry on Their Reading Public

While much more has been said about the book’s biased and fallacious reporting, suffice it to say that Going Clear was never intended to be anything other than a hatchet job. Any “research” was conducted from the sole standpoint of “attack.”

Dear Mr. Ballwahn,

I read your September 20 book review with reference to Larry Wright’s Going Clear, a book most notorious for its inaccuracies and outright distortions about the Scientology religion and its members.

A primary Wright source, ex-Scientologist Marty Rathbun, interviewed by Wright for days in his preparation of the book, condemned it thoroughly, saying: “it was one viewpoint, it was one anti-Scientology narrative that excluded anything that might muddy that narrative, or might throw any bit of it into doubt. That was the end product of the book, Going Clear.”

While much more has been said about the book’s biased and fallacious reporting, suffice it to say that Going Clear was never intended to be anything other than a hatchet job. Any “research” was conducted from the sole standpoint of “attack.”

His book was exclusively a work of propaganda—an effort to manipulate minds into thinking a certain disparaging way about a new religion. Wright NEVER attempted to find out.

Then you make passing reference to Michelle’s LeClair’s falsehood-laced tale that seeks to steer attention away from her own criminal prosecution and defending multiple civil actions brought by elderly pensioners she bilked of more than $21 million.

It is truly disheartening to me that you would provide a platform to someone who so narrowly escaped jail time for masterminding a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that cost so many seniors dearly and that you would speak for her against them.

My questions are:

1. Have you ever set foot in a Church of Scientology and looked at it through untainted eyes?

2. Have you spoken with genuine interest to a Scientologist?

3. Have you watched Scientology.tv?

If your answer to any of these rather simple questions is “no”, then I recommend that you make time to watch Scientology.tv and observe the information for yourself, and then render an opinion based on personal observation.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Blair
