ABC 20/20 is missing the point

Scientology was priceless to me in raising happy, productive and confident daughters who have gone on to make a career for themselves, helping others.

Dear Mr. Harris,

I have been a Scientologist since 1982 and I have two daughters ages 23 and 26 who were raised in the Scientology faith.

My children have been active in The Way to Happiness Kids Club—a group that has a strong moral code—and their activities contributed to the community and a sustainable environment. They also had great role models in the group who were productive and very helpful to my girls.

Both daughters did Scientology courses as children when they expressed an interest in improving some area of their lives or when they wanted to tackle a problem. These courses helped them with study, communication and resolving problems. I was fully aware of all of their activities and they had to have my approval for everything that was done in the Church of Scientology when they were minors.

People working with them were only interested in helping them resolve their problems; there was never any inappropriate content whatsoever brought into their training or other activities.

Unlike what passes for “news” these days on the major networks, which I couldn’t let my children at the time watch or listen to, Scientology services taught my kids all about ethics and morals and helping others.

A key element of their training which has served them well has been learning to make decisions for themselves based on their own awareness of their own morals and ethics. This was hugely helpful when they went to school and helped them avoid many pitfalls.

Scientology was priceless to me in raising happy, productive and confident daughters who have gone on to make a career for themselves, helping others.

Sincerely,
Tess Runyan
