Recently, I saw the movie “Darkest Hour”, a film about Winston Churchill’s rise to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, on May 10, 1940 and the nearly overwhelming forces of Hitler’s Germany he confronted in the early years of WW II.

When you sit in a room, as I have, and quietly listen to your 90-year-old mother talk about the KKK riding through a North Carolina town with torches, causing the kind of fear she as a young child had never before seen in the eyes of grownups around her; or heard your husband’s uncle describe himself as a 17-year-old boy in Auschwitz standing before and escaping from “Doctor of Death” Josef Mengele, you know that these activities started with widespread religious discrimination.

Standing With Jews Everywhere, Remembering the Holocaust
Seventy-four years ago today, more than 7,000 prisoners were liberated from Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. As these once-again free people poured through the gates and returned to the world, they could not forget the 1.1 million who had already lost their lives within. Or the more than six million others killed elsewhere.
